According to the inhabitants, even though raging chieftaincy differences among the various royal families has denied the town of some important socio-economic progress in recent years, they will be more content with the peace and security enjoyed over the years than be saddled with violent conflict because of the parochial interest of certain individuals and groups at the expense of the entire important traditional community.
These issues came to the fore at a news conference organized by some concerned youth of Asaaman to draw the attention of duty bearers including the security agencies and the Manhyia Palace to quickly intervene to quell the rising state of insecurity from fear and panic among the residents in recent weeks.
According to the spokesperson of the concerned youth, Kwakwa Sarpong, the fear and panic catching up with the people is borne mainly by a feud within the royal families resulting in the presence of two queen mothers coming just weeks after the passing on of the chief of the town, Barima Owusu Sekyere last year.
According to the concerned youth, apart from stalled progress, the residents in the town now gripped with fear in going to either their farms or going to fetch water while the male youth in particular are now always looking over their shoulders whether alone or in groups for fear of being violently attacked by members of the various factions of the feud on grounds of perception of factionalism against one party or the other.
The concerned youth say the protracted violent conflict in Bawku in the Upper East region is guiding their decisions and actions in reacting to the dispute hence the resort to the press conference for all interested individuals and groups to act proactively to ensure calm and peace in the town.
