COLLINS SHS LOSES DORMITORY TO WILD FIRE

The only Boys’ Dormitory of the Collins Senior High School at Agogo in the Asante Akyem North district of Ashanti has been destroyed by fire rendering many of the students without places of abode.

The incident occurred at about 1 pm last Saturday when most of the students had already left for home on short break.

An eye witness told Ashanti Today that even though the actual cause of the incident is yet to be established, it is suspected to have been occasioned by unstable electricity supply to the dormitory at the time.

According to the eyewitness, the fire was first detected at Room Four of Dora House. It said before personnel from the Ghana Fire Service Fire would arrive from their station at Konongo about an hour after a distress call had been made, all the nine rooms on the first floor had been completely destroyed by the fire.

Consequently, the students could not salvage any of their personal effects such as mattresses, and learning materials as well as cash. It said one final year student who returned to school last Friday with 500 Ghana Cedis being the remainder of his Fees for the term, lost the amount to the inferno.

The few available students have been given a temporary accommodation on campus. The incident occurred at a time the Headmaster had traveled on an official assignment. The Fire Service has already started investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire.

Meanwhile, the DCE of Asante Akyem North, Oti Boateng, and the District Police Commander visited the scene to learn at first hand, the problem.

The authorities of the Collins Senior High School are therefore appealing for an urgent assistance in cash and kind from members of the public so as to ease difficulties the situation will bring to bear on students.
