GHANA RECORDS 3K CERVICAL CANCER CASES YEARLY-GMA PREZ
The
Ghana Medical Association, GMA, has reported that about three thousand new
cases of cervical cancers are reported at hospitals in Ghana every year. Out of
this figure, two thousand of the patients are unable to survive the disease due
to late detection and reporting for treatment and management.
The President of
the GMA, Dr. Frank Ankobea, disclosed this in Kumasi at the commemoration of
the 2019 World Cancer Day. The event, which was being held in Ghana for the
first time, was on the theme “I am I will” with a focus on encouraging everyone
to show interest in the crusade against the increasing cases of cancer of all
forms.
The GMA President, who is also an Obstetrician Gynecologist, was emphatic
that Cervical Cancer is a sexually transmitted disease that is preventable. He
noted that, the disease is the only female cancer, caused by the HPV, that is preventable and wondered why there has
not been much effort at halting its contraction in society.
Dr. Ankobea noted
that girls who engage in sex before age 16 or give birth before 20 years old as
well as females with multiple sex partners as being highly exposed to
contracting the disease.
He therefore advised girls to delay their sexual
intercourse and also their child birth among other tendencies to reduce their
risk level of getting cervical cancer. He suggested to government to include
its treatment and care in the National Health Insurance Scheme to provide
financial relief to the sufferers in view of the high cost of care.
