TEACHER TRAINING COLLEGES TO BECOME UNIVERSITIES SOON-EDUC MINISTER-


The Minister of Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has disclosed that that from the next academic year beginning this September, all the Colleges of Education in the country will be upgraded to the status of University Colleges. 

The Colleges will therefore begin a four year Bachelor of Education programs. He said in the near future,  the minimum requirement for teaching, will be first degree at any level in any  Educational system so as to upgrade the capacity of teachers to respond to the current and changing educational needs. 

The Minister made this known in Kumasi in an address read on his behalf at the 14th graduation ceremony of the St. Louis College of Education. 
The event, which was on the theme: “The Excellent Teacher-An Indispensable Resource for Sustainable National Development”, saw the passing out of 316 students from both the regular  Diploma in Basic Education and 350 others from the Sandwich course in Early Childhood Education. 

Dr. Opoku Prempeh noted that government is currently perusing many reforms in the educational sector which include changes in the curricular of basic and second cycle schools and mainstreaming vocational and technical education.

 He said government is committed to improving the quality of formal education to serve as the springboard for national socio-economic development.

 Dr. Opoku Prempeh advised the graduating students to use technology judiciously, be disciplined and hardworking to make positive impact on society.

The Principal of the St. Louis College of Education, Mrs. Comfort Boakye-Mensah appealed to government to reconstitute the College’s Councils to enhance management of the College. 

She appealed also for financial clearance for the recruitment of some essential staff to replace those who have gone on retirement. She encouraged them to brace themselves up for the teacher licensing policy which is starting with them.

 The Principal expressed delight that, for the first time in the history of the College, the Best graduating student, Priscilla Achiaa Gyasi, also received an Excellence Award from the University of Cape Coast. 

 Miss Gyasi emerged the overall best graduate in the Ashanti and Brong Ahafo Zonal. She received a citation, cash, Kente, mattress and a plaque. Six other graduating students who also obtained First Class, received Kente, cash as well as plaque.
