ACCEPT DRIVER'S LICENSE, VOTER's CARD IN NIA REGISTRATION-METHODIST BISHOP URGES GOV'T.
The
Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, Ghana, Most Reverend Titus Awotwe
Pratt, says the use of only Birth Certificate and Passport as admissible
identification document for registration for the Ghana Card is too restrictive.
Government must therefore accept to include other legal document easily
accessible by genuine citizens such as Driver’s License and the Voter’s ID
Cards to enable as many Ghanaians register for the Ghana Card.
Most Rev.
Awotwe-Pratt gave the advice at Ayigya in the Oforikrom Municipality of Ashanti
at a Commissioning Service for new Lay Evangelists into the Methodist Church.
The
24 new Lay Evangelists, who come from various parts of Ghana, had successfully
completed a two-year training programme at the Freeman Development Centre in
Kumasi.
During the training period, they took courses such as Counselling,
Evangelism and Theology before undertaking a practical evangelism at Abuontem
in the Bosomtwe district of Ashanti where they planted their commemorative
Church. They were each given a Holy Bible and a Certificate.
Speaking to the
media later, the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, Ghana, Most Rev. Titus
Awotwe-Pratt, spoke about the need for government to widen the scope of
registration criteria to cover as many Ghanaians as possible.
He urged the
National Identification Authority to accept identification modules such as the
Driver’s License and Voter’s ID Card for the registration.
This, he noted, will engender trust, support and acceptance of the outcome.
On the issue of
homosexuality, Most Rev. Awotwe-Pratt challenged government to publicly make
clear, Ghana’s position on the matter. He emphasized however, that the
Methodist Church in Ghana will never support homosexuality saying that the
practice is evil and will not be condoned.
He called for a national development
policy that should compel all succeeding governments to complete projects and
programmes initiative by previous governments in the interest of the country.
The
Director of Evangelism, Mission and Renewal of the Methodist Church, Ghana,
Very Rev. Samuel Adu Boateng, said the church will cater for the
financial and residential needs of the new Evangelists who will be posted to
various mission fields. He advised them to live above reproach and be worthy ambassadors
of the Church.
