ASANTEHEN ENSTOOLS ELDEST SISTER 14TH ASANTEHEMAA
History has been made in Asanteman as the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, named and enstooled his eldest sister, Nana Ama Konadu, as the 14th Asantehemaa.
Nana Ama Konadu, who is in her mid 80s, thus succeeds her late mother, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem who passed on to the ancestral world on 14th November, 2016.
It is said to be the first time in history that a mother and her eldest child and youngest child have ruled Asanteman almost at the same time.
According to Asante’s tradition and custom, the Asantehene has the sole prerogative to choose and install a qualified member of the Oyoko royal family as Asantehenemaa when the Stool becomes vacant.
In this instance, Otumfuo Osei Tutu had less difficulty in selecting a successor for his late mother as Nana Ama Konadu came up as the Eldest daughter of the late Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem.
Her naming and enstoolment coincided with the 80th Day Observance of the passing on of Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem.
By custom and tradition again, the new Asantehemaa will be officially introduced to the Kumasi Traditional Council by Thursday and later to the bigger Asanteman Council to conclude her selection, naming and outdooring processes.
The new Asantehemaa is yet to make public whether or not she would select a different stool name from her real name as has been the tradition.
Thereafter, Nana Ama Konadu, together with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, will plan the final funeral rites for the late Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem tentatively a year after death.
After enstoolment at the Asantehemaa’s Court, some of the chiefs and queens in the Ashanti region took advantage of the opportunity to pay homage to her and welcome her to the prominent seat of the second highest seat of Asanteman.
Before sitting in state to receive sympathizers and well wishers to commemorate the traditional 80th Day since the death of Nana Afia Serwaa Ampem, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, riding in a palanquin and dressed in his full royal mourning regalia amidst the incessant firing of musketry, also paid homage to the new Asantehemaa.
The day was marked with pomp and pageantry as the elderly and young alike, smeared with powder, danced to one of the popular music of the people, Nwomkro with specially composed song for Nana Ama Konadu.
In an interview, the Linguist of the late Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem and Chief of Bomso in Kumasi, Nana Owusu Diaka, noted that the choice of Nana Ama Konadu to succeed her late biological mother was without question, as she is an exact replica of the late mother both in speech and conduct.
The queen of Ejisu, Nana Yaa Asantewaa, also expressed satisfaction with the peaceful nature of the enstoolment. She pledged to support the new Asantehemaa to succeed.
