REMOVE THE VC AND FACE CHAOS-KNUST TEWU THREATENS
Members of the Kwame Nkrumah
University of Science and Technology branch of the Teachers and Educational
Workers’ Union, TEWU, this morning, Monday October 29, went on a peaceful procession within the
campus of the university to press home their demand for the dissolution of the Interim Management Committee constituted by the Government to run affairs of
the university for the next three months.
They wielded placards bearing various
messages. The inscriptions included, “No VC, No Work”, “Leave Nhyriaba Obiri Danso alone”,
“Stop The Political Tricks” and “TEWU Does Not Recognize The IMC”.
Speaking to
Ashanti Today, the Chairman of the local Chapter of TEWU, Charles
Arthur insisted that the Union rejects outright, the Interim Management
Committee and demand an immediate restoration of the University Council in
accordance with the statutes and regulations of the institution. Therefore,
TEWU rejects also invitation by the government to the Union for a
representative on the Interim Management.
Mr. Arthur warned that the protest
would continue unabated should government refuse to dissolve the IMC, and said that one other consideration of the workers is the motive for the dissolution
of the Council.
He warned that 'there would be chaos' and long term disruption of
the current academic calendar should any attempt be made to remove Professor
Akwasi Obiri Danso from office as Vice Chancellor. In such a case, Mr. Authur
noted, could seriously go against the next intake of fresh students.
